The Cummins ISX (and its successor, the X15) powers a huge share of the trucks running the I-80/I-90 corridor. When one throws a fault, the dash gives you a code number — here are the ones worth knowing on sight, and what they usually mean.
How Cummins codes are displayed
Cummins uses its own fault code numbers on the dash, which map to standard SPN/FMI pairs underneath. A code can be active (happening now) or inactive (logged but not currently present). Active codes with a red lamp demand attention; inactive codes help a tech see the history.
High-frequency ISX/X15 fault codes
- Fault 3714 — SCR conversion / aftertreatment; engine derate. Often the code drivers first notice because the truck loses power.
- Fault 1569 — Fuel system engine protection derate. Power is being pulled to protect the engine.
- Fault 5394 — DEF dosing unit issue. The DEF injector isn’t dosing correctly.
- Fault 3712 — SCR operator inducement, derate active. The emissions system is forcing a speed limit.
- Fault 1866 / 1867 — Aftertreatment DPF conditions. Soot loading and regen-related.
- Fault 2555 / 2554 — Intake air heater circuit. Common cold-weather no-start contributor.
- Fault 559 — Injector metering rail low pressure. Can cause rough running or low power.
The codes that mean “shut down”
Any code paired with a red stop lamp, a rapid power derate, high coolant temperature, or low oil pressure is a stop-now event. Cummins engine-protection logic exists to save the engine — overriding it by pushing on can convert a $400 sensor into a $20,000 rebuild.
Why one code often hides several
A single failed NOx sensor, DEF quality problem, or dosing fault can cascade into three or four related aftertreatment codes. Reading the dash tells you the family of the problem; a technician’s tool tells you the specific failed part so you don’t throw money at the wrong component.

If your ISX or X15 is in a derate and won’t clear on the corridor, a mobile diesel tech can pull the full code set, test the sensors, dose or replace DEF components, and run a regen right where you’re parked.
